Somewhere in Time was shot on film in 1980, and you can feel every bit of that age in the presentation. The transfer from Kino is genuinely good, and the film looks stable throughout, but you will see the expected analog issues. There are light scratches, faint lines, and the occasional streak that pops up, all of which come from the original elements. Grain is present and shifts between fine and heavier depending on the shot. Some scenes drift a little soft, which is just the nature of the photography and lenses used at the time. None of this feels like a problem with the transfer. It is simply the reality of the source.
What impressed me most is how clean the encode is. There is no digital breakup, no smearing, and no artificial sharpening. The film has that natural, gentle look you want from a romantic drama shot on real film. Colors are handled well, and the overall image feels honest to the era. Kino did a solid job with what they had.
AUDIO QUALITY
The audio is serviceable. It is a mono track, and it does exactly what it needs to do without any negative issues. Dialogue is clear, the score comes through nicely, and nothing sounds distorted or pushed. It is limited by the production, but it works fine for this type of movie.
OVERALL & MOVIE THOUGHTS
The transfer is good, the film elements show their age, and the audio is simple but clean. If you love the movie, this is a very easy upgrade.
I really liked the movie, but the Sci-fi nut in me wanted more explanation about the coin, and I wanted more time with them as a couple and getting to know each other. The girl in the movie looks absolutely incredible, and she's got the "love at first sight", look to her. You just can't help but be drawn to a woman that beautiful, she's perfect. But, for what it was, more of a love and Romance movie, rather than out and out Sci-fi, I quite enjoyed it. Not watching it before it felt like The Lake House with Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves, and actually many others. I love the idea of it. I'd like a movie similar to this made today, but with modern Hollywood the way it is, I'm confident it couldn't be done in a traditional cinema way, so unfortunately, why bother?
So thankfully movies like this won't be lost Somewhere in Time, you can now get it in 4K.
