These fleeting wildflowers are some of the first signs that Ontario’s Highlands is coming back to life after winter 🌸
Blooming quietly across the forest floor right now:
💛 Yellow Trout Lily — recognized by its bright yellow petals and distinctive mottled leaves that resemble brook trout markings
🤍 Hepatica — delicate white blooms that emerge before the trees leaf out
💜 Hepatica — soft purple flowers bringing early colour to the woodland understory
Spring ephemerals like these only appear for a short window each year, making every sighting feel a little extra special.

It is SPRING EPHEMERAL SEASON!! Bloodroot, Virginia Bluebells, and Dutchman's Breeches have all bloomed this week. They will feed newly-arrived pollinators until the canopy fills out and their yearly cycle ends.🌱🌼🪻

🪷🦨 Spring officially started this week, and some Plant Biology faculty displayed their favorite early spring ephemerals from southern Illinois. The remarkable diversity of these jewels in our area deserves to be highlighted.

Happy #EarthDay! NYS is home to some spectacular #springephemerals. These little beauties make a short appearance each spring before the trees leaf out, and are a source of nectar and pollen for insects. Many species are protected, meaning it's illegal to pick or trample them.
