Driver Impaired; Loaded gun seized

This morning at 1:40 a.m., the Barrie Police Service was notified of a single motor vehicle collision that occurred on Bayview Drive and Springhome Road, in the city of Barrie.
Upon arrival at the scene, a pickup truck was observed in collision with a hydro pole located on the northeast corner of the intersection.
The unconscious driver, a 41-year-old male from Barrie, was being tended to by paramedics and was later revived.
Police immediately determined that the driver was impaired by drug.
He was placed under arrest and transported to a local hospital where the investigation continued.
Prior to departing, a satchel that the male was wearing was searched and it was found to contain a substance believed to be cocaine and at the hospital the male was found to be in possession of what was believed to be methamphetamine.
Also located in the pickup, and in very close proximity to the driver, was a fully loaded semi-automatic firearm.
The male was treated at hospital and released into the custody of police who transported him back to Barrie Police Headquarters where the investigation continued.
As a result, the arrested male has been charged with:
Operation while impaired
Dangerous operation
Possession of a Schedule I Substance- Cocaine
Possession of a Schedule I Substance – Methamphetamine
Careless Storage of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition
Careless Use of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition
Possession of Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm.
The accused has been held in custody and is scheduled to appear, by video, for a bail hearing later today with the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie.
