I would say that mathematics (the collection of all mathematical truths) exists independently of the natural world - but humanity’s (not very good) ability to access the platonic world of logic/mathematics through advanced thought is an emergent property of nature, sure

Time requires a differential but a differential doesn’t require time

You’re kinda contradicting yourself, because according to Platonists (who claim math is discovered) mathematics doesn’t need time, the universe, or reality - to exist. So you’re arguing against yourself now

My opinion is the same, after all e.g. symbol of ∫ can be different.

Mathematics does not concern itself with the concept of time or energy. Or reality. I don’t really want to try to decipher that. It’s not really relevant to anything we were talking about.

Fwiw, my take
Harris, @tegmark and others are incorrect in their assumptions about math. Here’s my heretical take: Math, at its core, is empirical. All numbers derive from counting. It’s observable. 🧵

@ToKTeacher is correct. Is the equivalent of asking "Is English invented or discovered?" Are there substantial difference between the languages? Yes, obviously, and substantial. However, the equivalence remains...

Intuitionism is the crazy one. They have very strict rules and they don’t accept a lot of mainstream math. Each school is well represented by famous mathematicians and scientists.

1. Platonism: Mathematical objects are real, they inhabit an abstract world, we are discovering truths about it 2. Formalism: Math is a game, we make up the rules, and we follow them 3. Constructivism/humanism: Math is invented, it’s a social & cultural activity 4. Intuitionism:

It’s totally okay to be passionate about it. But it’s a philosophical, not a mathematical question. So there is no definite right and wrong here. In my opinion, both are kind of true. So there are 4 main schools of thought:

Since you see how logical it is and assume that everyone else already knows this, I find myself in the position of thanking you for your very well received compliment.

That other post was me being stupid.

Mathematics as an emergent property of nature then? Just been in a Gaudi exhibition and got recent thoughts on nature’s fundamentals

If we start discussing i meant rather logic. Every system, physical or abstract, is made of sets of objects, entities etc. and governing them rules. Math creates abstract entities: numbers, matrixes, operators etc. and discovers governing them rules. Physics does it in real world
