Yesterday, I introduced House Bill 6067 to help reduce unnecessary financial burdens on Michigan farmers and provide greater clarity for those who supplement on agritourism to stay in business.
Under current law, farmers who host events on their property risk losing their classification as agricultural real property. This creates uncertainty and can result in higher property taxes if portions of their land are reclassified as commercial.
For many family farms, agritourism is not just an added bonus, but a necessary way to supplement income, attract visitors, and remain financially viable in a challenging economic environment. House Bill 6067 addresses this issue by clarifying that parcels used for agritourism are presumed to remain agricultural real property. Importantly, it shifts the burden of proof to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to demonstrate otherwise.
HB 6067 provides farmers with greater certainty and protection, helping ensure they are not penalized for finding innovative ways to sustain their operations. This common-sense reform recognizes how modern agriculture operates today and allows farmers to diversify responsibly, continue contributing to their communities, and keep more land in active agricultural use for future generations.
