Each winter helps shape California’s water future. This year, we didn’t get as much snow as we normally would, and warmer temperatures melted the snow we did get earlier in the season. Watch to learn more about how the State Water Project was designed to work with nature and how we’re preparing for summer. #StateWaterProject #CaliforniaWater

Water that supports millions of Californians and thousands of acres of farmland begins as snow high in the Sierra Nevada. Watch below to see how it moves from the snowpack to your tap. Then, tune in next week as DWR staff go live on YouTube for the fourth Phillips Station snow survey of the season. This survey plays a critical role in forecasting how much water will melt and flow into California’s reservoirs. Watch live: youtube.com/live/-Amfexziu58… #CAWater #StateWaterProject #SnowSurvey

🐟✨ Follow that fish! DWR is teaming up with @ucdavis to track juvenile salmon on their journey down the Sacramento River. Using a high-tech, non-physical barrier, powered by light, bubbles, and sound—we’re helping guide fish away from Georgiana Slough and toward safer waters. How do we know it’s working? We tag and track the fish to see if they stay on course and make it past Benicia and beyond. Smart science Innovative tools = Better survival for salmon. 🌊💙 #CaliforniaWater #StateWaterProject #SacramentoRiver #FishTagging #ScienceInAction

Did you know that climate change can threaten up to 10% of California’s water supply by 2040? To help combat the devastating effects of a hotter, drier future, the State Water Project critically captures and stores water from major storm events. Thanks to a 705-mile-long network of reservoirs, pipelines, canals, levees and powerplants; the SWP provides Californians with essential water supply, flood control, and recreation while supporting our state economy and offering nearly nine million jobs. DWR announced an initial State Water Project allocation of 10 percent of requested supplies for the new water year. Each year, DWR provides the initial SWP allocation based on available water storage, projected water supply and water demands. The SWP is contractually required to make an initial allocation forecast by December 1 each year. Since it is so early in the season, the initial allocation typically reflects current hydrological conditions, existing reservoir storage, and an assumption of dry conditions through the rest of the year. So far, the wet season is off to a good start with beneficial rain falling in Northern California and Southern California already seeing significant rainfall following a dry year last year. This allocation represents the first water supply forecast of the season for the 29 public water agencies served by the SWP which provides water to 27 million Californians and 750,000 acres of farmland.
