It is Hawaiian 🌺 week in the orchestra room. These 5th graders did a super job of playing a D scale with slur (all while wearing plastic leis). During Hawaiian 🌺 Week we give the lesson room a tropical 🌓 feel to help cure the midwinter ā„ļø blues. #MindOverMatter #stringchat

We use names of states to help us with new rhythms. šŸŽµ And it gives us an excuse to have a collection of college football šŸˆ helmets! #stringchat

For our orchestra teacher followers. #stringchat We copied off finger pattern charts on card stock and used heavy duty tape to attach them as a ā€˜folder flap’. This way all of our 2nd year players will have quick access for note location. DM for a pdf of template.

R3: Prior to yesterday I was going to say ā€œstarting beginnersā€ for the answer to this question but I visited the IU String Project yesterday and my whole perspective on what beginners can do has completely changed #StringChat

R2: A new thing for me this year is hosting a student teacher! It’s been quite the experience so far. I’m reflecting quite a bit on why and how I teach the way I do. #StringChat

I’m Lauren Gruber, orchestra teacher grades 6-12 in Richmond, Indiana. My favorite thing about fall is that the temperatures have stabilized and some of our instruments are staying more in tune šŸ˜‚ #StringChat

My first edchat ever - found it tough to keep up so will enjoy taking some time over the next couple days to see what I missed & maybe chime in some more. Thanks for hosting, @ridgevieworchs Nice to meet everyone! #stringchat

This is a mess b/c I haven't cleaned it up for students yet but this is what the high school kids will use for our Stevie Wonder tune this year. But they will build the chord stacks themselves on blank staff. 1st year students will just write root notes, not all tones #stringchat

We have a number of 'gig books' made up with flex scoring that allows students from all ages to join extra groups ad play together for 'hired' performances. Great for learning, great for retention, great for morale! #stringchat

I also try to make sure 25% of what I do with Ss is taught only by ear, and we have one or two pieces a year at least that we perform by following a chord chart. That looks different for my older students than my younger but we build on it. Super important skills #stringchat

R4: I always struggle with concert order! I try to start and end with something upbeat but other than that I’m just trying to balance who’s conducting (co teacher/student teacher/etc). Tips welcome! #StringChat

I vary ways of introducing as @MrsThrush17 mentions. One of my favourite ways to introduce can be to have Ss look at piece without playing or hearing & predict what the piece will be like, then reflecting after a sightread or listening to recording. #stringchat
