For retired working dogs, medical care is one of their most urgent post-service needs & the cost often goes beyond what their families or departments can manage. Since retiring from the New York State Police, #K9Del has faced several medical emergencies – including a surgery & more recently, a case of swollen intestines after swallowing a leather bite rag. Spike’s Pack, let’s wish #K9Armin a speedy recovery! 🐺 Thanks to the commitment & generosity of our donors, Spike’s K9 Fund was able to cover the cost of his critical medical treatment, which totaled more than $12,000. Now retired, Armin was recently diagnosed with a large mass on his spleen. Without immediate intervention, his life expectancy was estimated at just 2 to 4 months. He underwent urgent surgery to remove both his spleen & the mass. Now home with his family, Armin’s handler shares that he’s making a strong recovery & returning to his old self each day. K9 Armin served in the Capital District of Sacramento & the Law Enforcement and Emergency Services Division. One career highlight was meeting the Dalai Lama during his visit with the California Governor. After conducting the sweep, & at the end of the visit, the Dalai Lama looked directly at Armin & said, “Thank you, my friend.” Armin, dignified as always, met his gaze with respect & professionalism, as if he fully understood the significance of that moment. Throughout his career, Armin performed hundreds of explosives detection sweeps for dignitaries, large events & unattended items, always ensuring the safety of the public & his partner. Armin worked tirelessly without fail. He’s more than earned his retirement & we’re proud to have played a part in ensuring he gets the care he deserves for a healthy, comfortable life. We are deeply saddened to announce the unexpected passing of #K9Monte. Monte, an 8 1/2-year-old Belgian Malinois / German Shepherd mix, served with distinction & courage with the @mcpnews in MD. When paired with his handler, Cpl. Brower, in 2018, Monte was named in honor of Brower’s late grandfather. Together, they became certified in both patrol work & CDS detection, making countless apprehensions over 6 years. One of Monte’s most notable feats was tracking down an armed homicide suspect in the woods, preventing him from reaching a loaded handgun that could have posed a serious threat to officers. On December 18, 2024, Monte reported for duty as usual, full of enthusiasm. Hours later, he showed signs of distress & was rushed to the emergency vet, where it was found that he was bleeding internally & had multiple tumors – surgery was no longer an option. Monte was stabilized & made comfortable with pain medication. Surrounded by his handler & family, he passed peacefully in their arms. Monte’s legacy will live on in the lives he touched. 🐾 On his days off, Monte enjoyed long morning walks through the woods with Cpl. Brower, where the idea for #IronDog – a 3-mile obstacle course for K9 teams nationwide – was born. The event later evolved into a charity initiative for Spike’s K9 Fund. (At the start of Monte’s career, & with your generosity, we were able to donate ballistic vests to protect all MCPD K9s.) In honor of Monte & his incredible legacy, we ask that you consider a donation to the Iron Dog campaign. Meet K9 Wick of @MNPDNashville! 🐺 K9 Wick is a proud recipient of our K9 Krijger Ballistic Vest Campaign & a beneficiary of #SpikesSchools, thanks to the generosity of our Spike’s Pack. Recently, Wick demonstrated exceptional courage & skill when – alongside his partner Officer Reingardt, Violent Crimes detectives & officers from Aviation & Madison – he helped apprehend a dangerous suspect linked to multiple vehicle crimes. In 2024 alone, the suspect was arrested for vehicle theft, evading arrest, firearm theft, reckless driving & causing a crash with personal injury after wrecking a stolen car in East #Nashville. Locating & apprehending unpredictable, often dangerous suspects is a daily challenge for working dogs – that’s why specialized training & ballistic protection are critical to their safety & effectiveness. A subsequent search led to the seizure of multiple types of illegal drugs. Niko is one of the K9s who received a ballistic vest through our K9 Krijger Ballistic Vest Campaign last year, thanks to the generosity of our donors.
