During an interview with Al Modon, Mayor of Sed el-Bouchrieh and vice president of the Universal Syriac Union Party (USUP) Leila Latti highlighted the deep Syriac and Aramaic roots embedded in many Lebanese village names, explaining that every village name beginning with “Kfar” is of Syriac origin, as the word literally means “village” or “hamlet” in Syriac. She also noted that many Lebanese villages begin with “Ain,” meaning a water spring, emphasizing that the term remains widely used in everyday Lebanese speech to this day. Latti further explained that the word “Beit,” found in numerous village names across Lebanon, did not originally mean “house” or “home” as commonly believed. According to her, the term was first used by Aramaic peoples to signify a “kingdom,” before later evolving to also refer to a “family.” She pointed out that this cultural and linguistic heritage is still reflected in Lebanese society today through expressions such as: “Which Beit are you from?” instead of “Which family are you from?” Latti also stated that the name “Lebanon” itself carries Syriac roots, explaining that the Syriac word “Leb” means “heart” or “core.” Her remarks shed light on the enduring Syriac and Aramaic linguistic heritage woven into Lebanon’s history, identity, and everyday language. #Lebanon #Syriac #Aramaic #SyriacLanguage #LebaneseHistory #MiddleEast #CulturalHeritage #LebaneseIdentity

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas stated during a press briefing ahead of the European Union Foreign Ministers’ meeting on Syria that she will hold extensive discussions with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani regarding the rights of minorities and diverse communities in Syria — including the right to education in their mother tongues. Syria has long been a mosaic of peoples, cultures, and languages that form an essential part of the country’s historical and civilizational identity. Among these is the Syriac language — one of the world’s oldest continuously spoken languages and the ancestral language of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people. Preserving and supporting the right to learn and use Syriac, alongside other native languages in Syria, is vital for safeguarding the country’s rich cultural and linguistic heritage for future generations. Protecting linguistic and cultural rights is essential for preserving Syria’s rich and diverse heritage. #Syria #EuropeanUnion #KajaKallas #MinorityRights #MotherTongue #Syriac #SyriacLanguage #Aramean #Assyrian #Chaldean #Kurdish

Book Release: 'The Voice of Culture' by Malfono Yusuf Beğtaş Yusuf Beğtaş released his latest Syriac-language book, 'The Voice of Culture' (ܨܘܬܐ ܕܡܪܕܘܬܐ), which explores the concepts of “empathy and understanding” in human life. Beğtaş, an experienced teacher of the Syriac language and writer of many articles and books, highlights the lack of empathy and understanding in the daily lives of modern human beings and offers guidance and perspective on how to incorporate these concepts in daily modern life. In doing so, Beğtaş draws on the deep literary heritage and profound world of thought and meaning of the Syriac language. “This work is a reflection of a spirit that brings together the expressive power, cultural memory, and hidden subtleties of humanity in the Syriac language.” Beğtaş goes beyond the superficial aspects of the external world and brings the reader on a journey to the inner self, a journey of meaning that requires reflection and internalization. The author writes in his introduction, “In this journey, I have sought to emphasize how crucial mastering the nuances of language and establishing a sound logical approach are to accurately understanding empathy and understanding.” #SyriacLanguage #BookRelease2026 #SyriacLiterature #BooksThatInspire
