As an adult, I tried everything. Meal-delivery boxes. Spin classes I dreaded. A patient trainer whose work I undid at dinner. Nothing stuck. Because I kept bolting new behaviors onto an unchanged life. I was renting discipline by the month instead of owning new habits. Then last year, I came home from a cruise 20 pounds heavier, sat on the edge of the tub, and went quiet. I thought about a business partner who once told me, in a room full of people, that my weight "showed in how I worked." Enough, I thought. What finally changed things wasn't willpower. It was systems. One idea from Atomic Habits rewired me: You don't rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.
