Inherited an internal website project: unrealistic expectations, poorly defined goals, shrinking resources. "Under construction" pages suck. Here's my "under construction" page. IDGAF in the most constructive, helpful way I can. #techWriterLife #technicalWriting #writeTheDocs

Praise is more rare and precious, so the last few days of kind words from multiple channels have left me rather chuffed, including this gem: "extremely good simple explanations." I may need to get that tattooed somewhere discrete. #technicalWriting #techWriterLife #writeTheDocs

I love working as a tech writer. I'm constantly learning. I get a lot of satisfaction from helping people do the stuff they need to do. Those folks are often grateful so I also get a lot of thanks. #technicalWriting #techWriterLife #writeTheDocs

Interesting thread by a safety officer about how management often regards safety controls. Sub "doc" for "safety". Reminds me of "fix it in the doc" moments like "Phil, can you write the doc so the object model looks less insane?" #techWriterLife
Replying to @funranium
And because safety is typically considered an ancillary cost, unless that likelihood of something going wrong is high or the severity is spectacularly bad, management tends to not be interested in paying very much to implement a control. Hellooooo, training.

wikis = “magic snake oil” that doesn't replace tech writers. “You need someone to care about [the doc] or else it’s not going to be good.” I'm looking at you, the-doc-writes-itself Javadoc. #writeTheDocs #techWriterLife
New @redmonk Docs Are In video with @tychoish. "This is the spicy take: There is this now 30-year-old idea that you that things like wikis will democratize the documentation process. And what they actually do is diffuse responsibility for documentation" redmonk.com/videos/the-docs-…

Favorite tech-writer moments: That faraway look from the product owner & senior dev when you ask if an important bug fix also applies to a closely related bit of functionality. #techWriterLife

If you're a tech writer working on Windows/WPF apps, don't have Visual Studio, & need clean screenshots of controls, I recommend the Kaxaml XAML editor. It is olde, feels niche, & can be hard to find a trustworthy installer, but it saved my butt again. #techWriterLife

TFW you finally get something to work, but you've been so conditioned for failure that you spend an extra 20 minutes confirming that it REALLY works. #techWriterLife

Tech-writer powers, activate! #techWriterLife
I may need to go have a nice lay down. I got thanked by a grad student for teaching them this important writing lesson because no one had before: You can use acronyms but, even with a very familiar audience, always define them the first time it's used in your document.

Job satisfaction: Wife works @ an elementary school & has superpowers: she's wicked smart & gives a crap. Taught a coworker how to run a report. Feedback: "I run it 3x a day! It's the best thing!" Wife says she understands why I love my work: enabling folks. #techWriterLife

In-office blues: surprise traffic adds 50% to the commute, only 5 minutes late for a meeting… that I start with the right project but the wrong person. We've worked together for years & we had a good chuckle. Still… oof. #techWriterLife

Someone who asks if you're "just" a tech writer is either a sociopath or just criminally ignorant. Sometimes both. Tread carefully. #techWriterLife

Senior dev pings me for help with a report title format. It's tough: arbitrarily long strings, questions of user context & perspective, tight UI constraints & it needs to look good. I live for collaborations like this. #techWriterLife
