The DoT’s June 3 draft consultation proposes relaxing the 50% local content requirement for 36 key telecom products - opening the door for #MNCs like #cisco and #Ericsson, who today struggle to qualify as Class-I suppliers. This shift risks: • Undermining Domestic Investment Indian firms have poured R&D, manufacturing and genuine IP development into optical‐fiber and other gear. Dilution would reward superficial assembly over true value addition. • Weakening Strategic Control Eroding local‐content thresholds means relying on foreign-owned technologies, constraining India’s security and sovereignty in critical networks. • Discouraging Genuine “Make in India” When global majors can meet preference simply through token software tweaks, real innovation suffers and so does India’s long-term export potential. As a home-grown leader in fiber-optic and network-test tools, we urge the DoT to: 1. **Maintain or even tighten** the 50–60% local-content bar. 2. Ensure “Class-I” status rewards real manufacturing and IP creation. 3. Fast-track workshops with domestic #OEMs to address genuine pain points - without sacrificing ambition for ease. India’s telecom ecosystem is ready to compete globally - but only if policy stays bold and unimpaired.
