On the 4th ball of his Test career, Manav Suthar walked into history.
A 23-year-old left-arm spinner from Sri Ganganagar — a dusty town near the Pakistan border where his father teaches PE — became only the 8th Indian ever to take a wicket in his first over of Test cricket. Nilesh Kulkarni did it on the very first ball in 1997 vs Sri Lanka. Suthar got his on ball 4. Nearly three decades between those two moments.
The dismissal — Abdul Malik went for the sweep, top-edged, Mohammed Siraj completed a clean catch at backward square leg. The team mobbed him like he'd just won a final.
By stumps on Day 2 — 3 for 21 in 15.5 overs. Malik, Gurbaz, Afsar Zazai (c&b). India's first specialist spin Test debutant since Axar Patel in 2021. He also scored 28 with the bat. A genuine all-rounder cap.
Now someone will say — Afghanistan is a weak Test side, the pitch turned, anyone could've done it. Fair on paper. But that doesn't explain why only 7 Indians before him ever managed it. Wickets in your first Test over demand pinpoint length and the nerve to land that ball with a billion eyes watching.
But honestly — what makes this special is the path. 29 first-class games for Rajasthan. 129 wickets at 25.8. Six five-fors. Leading wicket-taker for Rajasthan in 2022-23 — 39 wickets in just 6 matches. Only 5 IPL games for Gujarat Titans across 3 seasons. No hype. Just grind.
Technically — what stood out was the control. Most debutants over-spin or over-flight in their first spell. Suthar tossed it up, hit the same spot ball after ball, let the natural drift do the work. His drift across the right-hander tempts the slog-sweep, then the ball straightens late. That's exactly how Malik fell.
To be fair — one game doesn't make a Test career. Kulkarni finished with 2 wickets in 3 Tests after his first-ball dream. The real exam for Suthar starts on flat decks abroad, when the pitch doesn't read his script.
But what a way to begin.
Tell me — does Suthar walk into India's Test XI? Or does he still wait behind Axar, Jadeja and Kuldeep?
Drop your verdict.
