#DYK? Americans spend over 90% of their time indoors – and poor indoor air quality is a top environmental health risk.
One major risk you might not think about is radon, a colorless, odorless gas that can pose serious health risks inside your home.
Check out the infographic below to learn more – and remember to keep radon on your radar. Testing is easy, affordable, and it can save lives.

ALT An infographic titled "Know the Facts About Radon: Air Quality Awareness Week." There are illustrated graphics surrounded by radon facts, including a figure with a highlighted respiratory system, a pair of lungs, and a house. There is a banner reading "Test. Fix. Save a Life" with a link to EPA's radon page at the bottom of the graphic. All information on the infographic can be found at www.epa.gov/radon.
#Radon ☢️ has been found in homes in every state across the U.S.. Testing is the only way to know if it is in yours! Test today! Maryland residents can get a radon test kit for only $3.00 Get yours today: drhomeair.fmbetterforms.com/…#TestFixSaveALife
ALT Text on purple background that says Do you know why it's important to test your home for radon? 1 in 15 homes tests high for radon levels. Radon is the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer, causing 21,000 lung cancer deaths per year. Among non-smokers, radon is the #1 cause of lung cancer. www.epa.gov/radon. EPA logo.
12/ For the scientists in the audience, this is the scatter plot
Given short period, and that I am not sure I am exactly duplicating the @Airthings processing algorithm for the @EconSenseInc data (dominates high values for tall short spike), this is VERY GOOD

8/ As an experimentalist, knowing quality of such home devices can vary a lot, wondered how well they work
A way to learn: intercompare. Did that in our house. Turned OFF radon fan during travel
Radon up when fan was off, down when on --> mitigation works!
#TestFixSaveALife
4/ Unfortunately, radon mitigation is NOT required in most places, e.g. in the US.
It is voluntary. Construction & rental industries resists because of cost
E.g. student rental apts. next to us: high radon, NO mitigation system ==> higher lung cancer rates

3/ Radon in homes can be mitigated a limited cost:
- Put a plastic film over the ground
- And a fan that runs all the time (ours uses 75 W, not much). Sucks soil gas and expels outdoors.

2/ Radon is more of a problem in some places than others, depending on the rocks in the soil. Places with granite are worst. There are maps such as from EPA or Airthings.
November is lung cancer awareness month, EPA promotes hashtag: #TestFixSaveALiferadonmap.com/
1/ INTERCOMPARISON of AFFORDABLE HOME RADON SENSORS
[TDLR: they compare well]
Radon:
- invisible odorless radioactive gas
- Rises from ground & accumulates indoors
- 2nd leading cause of lung cancer

This is stemming off of our environmental conversation in class today. Radon is a common environmental hazard that is not often talked about. Do you know if your home has radon? One test could save multiple lives. #TestFixSaveALife#EtownPops
Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers. More than 1 in 4 homes in KS test high for #radon, but the only way to detect it is to test it. Test kits are available from county extension offices & hardware & builder's supply stores.
