NASAの宇宙飛行士には、3段階のバッジがある。
候補生として選ばれた証であるNASAバッジから、基礎訓練を修了した者に授与される銀バッジへ。
そして、実際に宇宙へ飛んだ者だけが金バッジを手にする。
金バッジが渡されるのは、地上ではなく宇宙空間。
ミッション中、船長が新人飛行士の名前を一人ずつ呼び、その胸に金色のピンを付けるという。
宇宙で受け取り、大切に地球へ持ち帰る。宇宙飛行士だけが知る通過儀礼。
