All good things must come to an end.
The current bootcamp will be the final
@theSchoolOfCode Bootcamp. It’s been an incredible 10 year journey of building a social mission and a community like no other.
The mission was to create an open and equal opportunity for everyone to access a unique experience that masquerades as a coding course but is a Trojan Horse for personal growth. The key was mixing different types of people together. Working with people different from you is hard, but that's where the magic happens. Looking at the random bunch of people that make up our alumni and their different stories, seeing how they collaborate, support, and challenge each other makes me incredibly proud to be a part of it - School of Code is a microcosm of society at its best.
To everyone who has been part of this mission, thank you. There are just too many people to mention, truly. This intensive bootcamp requires a community to make it work: the team, supporters, employers, mentors, board, and our incredible bootcampers. It takes real courage to give up everything, pursue a new direction, venture into the unknown, and throw yourself outside of your comfort zone and start again. I'll always admire those who dared to take the opportunity that the Bootcamp offered.
School of Code has been a weird and wonderful journey:
- helping everyone from 500,000 school kids with a free coding game, to the homeless, the eldery, and taking our training to all corners of the UK, whether over Zoom or in Wembley Stadium
- starting a free coding bootcamp that has gone from experiment to directly helping almost 1000 people from 0 to tech professionals working with some of the world's best companies, from start-ups and local small businesses through to global giants, and helping people finding the confidence, capability, and community to thrive in the future
- managing to take our bootcamp model from project no one thought would work to national policy, engaging with fantastic people in government, starting with Andy Street and the WMCA team, all the way through to the DfE, it's been eye-opening and rewarding seeing the mission come to life that all bootcamps can be free
There's just been too much to mention, but it's been a wild ride.
As we wrap up the bootcamp, our focus is finishing on a high with our current cohort (who are flying) and alumni, and supporting our team's next steps.
This started as a small project to help people after my PhD because I just couldn't see past the cliff edge of automation, and I wanted to help create the national retraining scheme I felt was needed to help people deal with ever-more rapid change. In the blink of an eye it’s turned into more like 10 years. The only reason I've stuck it out this long is the sense of mission and social good that resonates through the people in School of Code that have made everything so worthwhile.
It’s the right time for a new chapter.
Thank you again, and wishing you all the best.
Chris
