DID YOU KNOW an entire Goosebumps series was CANCELLED before it even released?
In 2000, Legal Troubles and Declining Sales resulted in author R.L. Stine leaving Scholastic, abruptly leaving Goosebumps in a state of limbo for the moment. Stine however, planned to restart the Goosebumps books under a new publisher, HarperCollins for the Fall of 2000. 12 ISBNS were created, along with 3 titles and 2 cover arts from
@timjacobus. The series promised to be a return-to-form by revisiting stories and characters from the original series, with the first 3 books, “The Haunted Mask Lives!”, “Happy Holidays from Dead House”, and “Slappy New Year” all being sequels to stories from the original series.
The series would be advertised on Tim Jacobus’ website, with a “Halloween 2000” release date. However, no books would be released, and despite the date being pushed back with the hope of the books coming out, Goosebumps Gold would never see the light of day. It’s inferred that Scholastic quietly stepped in and killed the series before launch, due to licensing under a publisher that did not own the brand.
Stine would still write horror books under HarperCollins including The Nightmare Room and Rotten School series, but Goosebumps would not return until 2008 when Stine returned to Scholastic to create Goosebumps HorrorLand.
Very little information about Goosebumps Gold exists except for the titles, cover art, and surfaced cover mockups that have appeared in recent years, one of which own by our very own
