Some thoughts on
#TransformationalLearning
It’s rarely self directed.
It’s unexpected and supported by rational discourse to resolve dissonance. But that dissonance starts in surprising places that are difficult for the learner to predict or orchestrate.
Maybe not surprising to the curricular architect, but in the CET case I have in mind, it was not even predictable for me. Just had the necessary ingredients: disorienting dilemma (OSTE), reflection (self video reviews), discourse (video-based coaching). The cool part of this transformation is that it was triggered by a peer’s video rather than the individual’s. Even though peer 1 had prepped 1 video & peer 2 had prepped a different video, it was peer 1s video that led to peer 2s transformation.
TL;DR Transformation isn’t possible outside of community. And that community has to offer up something new for sense making. I suspect this phenomenon occurs serendipitously more often than not just by having the necessary ingredients.
Should we focus research more on the necessary ingredients or in manufacturing outcomes?
