Suspended among the trees, the 34 m² cabin is wrapped with 350 birdhouses, developed in collaboration with Swedish ornithologist Ulf Öhman. The installation aims to support local bird populations by recreating nesting spaces that have been diminished by forestry and environmental change. The project integrates architecture with habitat restoration, transforming the façade into an ecological infrastructure that strengthens the surrounding biosphere. 📍Harads, Sweden 📷 Mats Engfors / @fotographicsweden #parametricarchitecture #bigarchitects #bjarkeingels #treehotel #sweden

◽The Mirrorcube is a 4x4x4 meter treehouse located in Harads, near the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden. Designed as part of the Treehotel project, the structure is suspended around a single tree trunk and accessed via a rope bridge. 🧠 Learn AI in architecture, parametric design, and computational workflows at PAACADEMY: paacademy.com/courses/upcomi… The exterior is clad in mirrored glass, allowing it to visually blend with the forest surroundings. A UV coating, visible only to birds, is integrated into the glass to prevent collisions.

World’s strangest buildings Steel House (US) This extraordinary building, located near the city of Lubbock, Texas, immediately draws attention with its bizarre form. It resembles a giant rusty spaceship that seems to have landed on the edge of Yellow House Canyon. The project’s creator, sculptor and inventor Robert Bruno, began construction in 1973. It took him nearly 30 years to bring his vision to life, crafting everything by hand and using about 110 tons of corten steel—a corrosion-resistant material that gives the house its distinctive weathered look. House on the Cliff (Grenadines) Perched on one of the islands of the Grenadines in the Caribbean, this unusual residence appears to merge seamlessly with the surrounding rock. The architects managed to create a stunning sense of unity between the building and the landscape. The project was designed by the Spanish studio GilBartolome for a couple from Madrid, who fell in love with the local coastline and its natural beauty. Built from reinforced concrete, the house’s exterior is richly decorated with hundreds of handmade zinc scales, which shimmer across the façade. This technique not only evokes the movement of ocean waves but also protects the structure from the tropical climate. Inntel Hotel (Netherlands) Located in the center of Zaandam, near Amsterdam, this hotel opened in 2010 and instantly became a regional architectural icon thanks to its extraordinary design. The façade looks as if it has been assembled from a patchwork of 70 colorful pieces, each one inspired by elements of traditional local houses. The result is a whimsical twelve-story structure that seems to fuse multiple classic homes into one towering building. Treehotel (Sweden) Deep in the forests of Sweden’s Harads region, near the Arctic Circle, stands one of the world’s most famous eco-hotels. Opened in 2010, the Treehotel quickly became an international sensation. Its most striking creation is the Mirrorcube, a minimalist treehouse wrapped entirely in mirrored glass. The cube seems to slice through tree trunks, creating the illusion that nature flows right through the building. Constructed from lightweight aluminum and clad in reflective glass, the structure blends perfectly into its surroundings, reflecting the forest and leaving the ecosystem undisturbed. Balancing Barn (England) This mirrored building near the town of Thetford, Suffolk, is one of Britain’s most talked-about examples of contemporary rural architecture. Completed in 2010, the Balancing Barn takes inspiration from traditional countryside barns but reimagines them in a futuristic and surreal way. Nearly half of the structure projects dramatically over a slope, appearing to defy gravity and creating a mesmerizing sense of fragile balance. The Wave (Denmark) The Wave residential complex sits on the shores of the picturesque Vejle Fjord, in the Danish town of Vejle. Completed in 2018 after more than a decade of construction, the complex consists of five interconnected wave-shaped buildings. Its sweeping white façades echo the curves of the sea and surrounding hills, creating an impression of fluid motion. Beyond its visual appeal, the design ensures excellent natural lighting and offers panoramic views of the fjord from almost every apartment. Locals called Kent and Britta Lindvall crazy when they started building hotel rooms floating in the trees. (happens a lot for unique stays...) But today, royalty and celebrities fly to remote Sweden to stay there. This is their story. And proof that you don't need hospitality experience to build something extraordinary... Kent guided fishing trips along the Lule River. Britta was a small-town nurse in Harads, Sweden. Nothing about their background suggested they'd transform their tiny village into a global destination. Their first venture? Restoring a 1920s retirement home Britta loved since childhood into "Britta's Pensionat" - a guesthouse. It barely broke even. Remote Harads wasn't exactly a tourist hotspot. But they loved where they lived and refused to leave. The turning point came in 2008 around a campfire in Russia. Kent was fishing with architect friends. They discussed "The Tree Lover" - a story about urbanites building a treehouse to reconnect with nature. That sparked an idea: a hotel of unique treehouses. Kent convinced rival architects to each design one treehouse despite working for competing firms. Their vision was a rebellion against generic hospitality. They wanted to evoke childhood nostalgia while offering adult luxury and solitude. And they bet everything on it. The neighbors who'd known them their entire lives doubted them. Harads wasn't meant to be a tourist destination. But in July 2010, Treehotel opened with six unique rooms. - A mirrored cube that disappeared into the forest. - A giant nest accessed by retractable ladder. - A UFO for sci-fi dreamers. International press swarmed. and bookings rolled in from around the world. Karlie Kloss modeled there. Justin Bieber recharged during a European tour. Crown Princess Victoria enjoyed Britta's wild game patties. Kent accidentally discovered what modern travelers truly crave: Deep connection with nature, immersive experiences, and authentic design that tells a story. He figured this out long before "experiential travel" became a buzzword. For me, the biggest takeaway is that in the unique stays space... You don't need a hospitality background to build something world-class. You need vision, commitment to your location, and the courage to bet on what makes your property unique. Kent and Britta proved that.

Every great unique stay project faces major problems during construction. I've had my fair share... Treehotel in Sweden was no exception. Here's everything that went wrong and what we can learn from it: 1. Their UFO nearly became a real flying saucer During installation, wind caught the UFO unit mid-lift and started swaying dangerously. They had to secure it with additional cables and wait for perfect weather conditions before completing the installation. Lesson: Building unconventional structures in exposed locations requires obsessive attention to detail (and weather windows). 2. Their Mirrorcube was killing birds Birds kept crashing into the invisible mirrored walls. Kent halted construction entirely until they developed special infrared film that only birds could see. Lesson: When you build in nature, you have a responsibility to it. Don't compromise your values for a deadline. 3. Installing treehouses without damaging living trees Units were prefabricated off-site and hoisted into place. Some wrapped around living tree trunks without using a single nail. Figuring out how to suspend structures while keeping trees alive required custom engineering solutions. Lesson: Most unique stay projects require even more unique construction solutions. I've had my fair share of these challenges. It comes with the territory. Kent and Britta didn't let these problems kill their vision. They adapted. Problem-solved. Stayed committed to building with nature, not against it. That's what separates projects that become icons from projects that become cautionary tales. Construction never goes perfectly. Ever. It's how you respond to the problems that determines success.
