Pop Culture/Movie News/MMA The Smashing Machine Dwayne Johnson Earns First Golden Globe Nod for The Smashing Machine December 8, 2025 Johnson received his first Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Drama as UFC legend Mark Kerr in A24's The Smashing Machine, directed by Benny Safdie. The film traces Kerr's 1990s rise in mixed martial arts and his addiction struggles; it hit theaters October 3, 2025, earning praise for Johnson's transformation despite modest box office. Emily Blunt also got a Best Actress nod as Kerr's wife. WWE celebrated with a Monday Night Raw tribute, hailing him as The Final Boss, while he faces strong competition from Joel Edgerton, Michael B. Jordan, Wagner Moura, Jeremy Allen White, and Oscar Isaac at the January 11, 2026 ceremony. (Grok) News DJ Quotes To The Hollywood Reporter “I think the nomination represents the fight in everybody, especially with addictions and those demons that you battle” “Mark Kerr had it all and lost everything, and has since become sober. He did overdose twice. Life is good because he’s sober and because he made it. And not everyone is that lucky. That’s the movie that we wanted to make: a nod to those who fight.” Media Man: Inspiration. Hard work pays off. Great team effort. DJ and MK are both "The Man In The Arena"! Dwayne Johnson will also take part in an “In Conversation With” event, which is set to go down the same day as the TIFF premiere of the film. A new poster featuring Johnson in a fighting stance has also been widely shared, with Safdie praising Johnson’s commitment to the role. Filming took place from May to August 2024, despite a reported injury to Johnson during production. The real Mark Kerr has expressed approval of Johnson’s portrayal, sharing his excitement on social media. (Grok) Flashback to June 2024 “Look at that sucker right there ... It looks like I have a cantaloupe in the bottom of my elbow. I got banged up pretty good today in our scenes, and there might be some soft tissue damage in there. That’s a lot of fluid, we’ll see. Combat Sports/UFC/MMA/Pop Culture The Smashing Machine: News and Video News! (In Case You Missed It) MMA and Wrestling Scribes From Lifelong Fan To Sports Biz and beyond ... Under The Media Watercooler By Greg Tingle Rough Draft Scribe Gone Live To Beat UFC International Fight Week Deadline! Media Man: The Smashing Machine has grabbed our attention and imagination like very few films ever have. As a lifelong MMA and wrestling fan, to learn of Dwayne Johnson's casting as Mark Kerr, and to view the movie trailer, was a real treat, and even a flashback of sorts for when I was a young bloke (20 years old) at Newport on the Northern Beaches of Sydney where we had our own version of 'Fight Club' (submission only). Years later we got to help promote MMA and wrestling PPV's via working at Optus Vision/Comms with a collaboration with Main Event TV. Then helping promote some MMA events for even one of the competitors of UFC at one point, circa 2005, Pancrase Hybrid Fighting /Pancrase Australia. Mr Chris de Weaver headed up the Aussie division of Pancrase for those interested. It was via Pancrase (Japan) that I first because aware of future MMA/wrestling legend, Ken Shamrock, who by memory was also going under the name of Vince Torelli, as well as Ken Wayne Shamrock. Fun fact: Ken was the original "The Rock", and circa 1988 WWF's Don Muraco transformed from 'The Magnificent' to 'The Rock'. Solid name to say the least! Fast forward to just a couple of years ago and we got to witness Ken Shamrock vs Dan Severn in a shoot style pro wrestling event (Battle Championship Wrestling) at Moore Park in Sydney's eastern suburbs. That was my Australian style WrestleMania. I gave the match 4.5 stars. Back to Mr Johnson, Dwayne was a real sport to use on one of his Australian campaigns when he came down under to Sydney, Australia in June 2014 to help promote the Hercules movie. He even signed an oil art paintwork that my partner and I did. It was my idea, but my lady at the time did say 99 percent of the artwork. Still concept and planning matter. Without my part the art would have never got autographed by the man himself! Did I mention the paint was still drying when DJ signed it! Got some paint on my shirt too! Ha. It seemed timely to share some stories from the MMA/wrestling world, and reading about the latest on The Smashing Machine got us all fired up again. Oh, it's UFC International Fight Week also, so buzz is in the air and have travelled down the digital bush telegraph to Sin City Sydney. Big shout out to Dwayne Johnson, Ken Shamrock, Dan Severn, and thanks again to the UFC media team who got me in that time for UFC 293 media/fans event at Circular Quay with the live mic going back and forward with Bam Bam, Volk and Jack. Great memories from that day. As is sometimes said in pro wrestling, "Those who can do, those who can't are fans"! Rolling on the mats as a hobby is one thing, but getting in the UFC cage is a whole different kind of animal. Mark Kerr's legend is going to live on forever, as well as Dana White's and so many others. What a journey it continues to be.
