The system in softball isn't designed for long-term pitcher development. It's designed to win games this weekend.
Problems with the current model:
-Overuse, underdevelopment. Pitchers throw hundreds of innings but rarely have a structured plan to improve. SO MANY INJURED AND FATIGUED ARMS.
-No periodization. Pitchers go from high school season to summer ball to fall ball with little intentional buildup, recovery, or development phases.
-Volume is rewarded. The pitcher who can throw every inning often gets praised, while the pitcher who needs time to train, sets limits and develop feels like they're falling behind.
-Development gets replaced by exposure. Families spend thousands on tournaments and showcases while neglecting strength training, throwing development, and objective assessments.
-Lack of objective feedback. Everything becomes mechanical fixes. Instead of addressing strength, power, capacity, and force production, the answer is often another cue or another lesson.
-No long-term plan. Most pitchers don't have a 12-month development roadmap. They simply move from game to game and season to season.
The reality:
You can't compete your way into development.
Games expose your current abilities. Training changes them.
The pitchers who make the biggest jumps and stay healthy usually spend intentional time:
Building strength
Improving force production
Following structured throwing programs
Managing workloads
Using objective data
Periodizing their year
Tired of being the same year after year? Do something different.
