Rescues don’t always involve people—sometimes our feathered friends need a helping hand, too. Earlier this week, VBFD Fire Rescue 01 A-Shift teamed up with @vbpd Animal Control to rescue three baby ducks that had become trapped in a storm drain. After being safely retrieved, the ducklings were evaluated by Animal Control and then released back into their environment. A great example of teamwork and compassion in action—helping all members of our community, big and small. 🦆💛

On May 30, three VBFD firefighters—FF R. DiLeo, FF A. Swindell, and MFF A. Bailey—successfully completed their National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Wildland Firefighter Training through the Virginia Wildfire Academy at Longwood University. The training program consisted of four online courses: ICS-100, L-180, S-190, and S-130, followed by the S-130 Field Day, a hands-on practical exercise. Hosted by the Virginia Department of Forestry through the Virginia Wildfire Academy at Longwood University, the field day brings together firefighters from across the Commonwealth to complete a variety of skills and scenarios required for wildland firefighting operations. During the practical exercises, participants demonstrated proficiency in critical wildland firefighting tasks, including constructing fire lines, fire suppression techniques, and structural protection in wildfire environments. With the successful completion of the academy, these firefighters have earned their NWCG Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) certification, an important milestone in their wildland firefighting qualifications. Congratulations to FF DiLeo, FF Swindell, and MFF Bailey on this achievement, and thank you for your continued dedication to training, protecting lives, and safeguarding property.

It’s always uplifting to hear words of gratitude from someone we were able to help — especially when time is critical. Captain Jim Ingledue and MFF Francisco Medina truly went above and beyond, coming to the rescue for Ms. Thames and her mother on her such an important day as her mother's graduation from Regent University. Captain Ingledue and MFF Medina were true heroes who saved the day through their kindness, professionalism, and commitment to service. Thank you both for once again exemplifying the “VBFD Way!”

You never know what your next call will be. Earlier this week, VBFD crews were dispatched to a report of a boat in distress. Jet Ski 101 was launched from the beach, along with an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB), and both units responded to the area. After locating the jet ski and its two occupants, crews determined the craft had run aground on a sandbar due to low tide and was unable to get back underway. JSKI01 assisted in pulling the jet ski off the sandbar and back into navigable water before escorting it to the Crab Creek dock. One patient was evaluated and treated by EMS for a minor cut to her foot.

“Public service at its best” is a phrase that perfectly describes Richard Brown. Richard may be the only person in Virginia Beach history to earn two 20-year service awards — one as a firefighter with the Virginia Beach Fire Department and another as Training Coordinator for Virginia Task Force Two USAR (VA-TF2). Richard began his fire service career as a VBFD volunteer in 1974, was hired full-time in 1980, and retired as a Captain in 2003. Following his retirement, he continued serving the community as a substitute teacher with Virginia Beach City Public Schools before joining VA-TF2 as Training Coordinator in 2006. In total, Richard has dedicated an incredible 52 years of service to the City of Virginia Beach and the Virginia Beach Fire Department. His commitment, leadership, and dedication to public service have left a lasting impact on countless lives and generations of responders. We had a great time at Monsters on the Beach this past weekend, but did you know that beyond fighting fires 24/7/365, VBFD is an all-hazards response department? What many people may not realize is how we serve, support, and help keep our community safe during major public events — like this past weekend’s Pungo Offroad Monsters on the Beach event at the Oceanfront. Our teams operated on land with fire suppression and extrication units and UTVs, by sea with our fireboats, and by air with drones providing a bird’s eye view of the event and any potential need for assistance. No matter the environment, VBFD is always ready to respond to any emergency. #firefighter #firstresponders #fireboat #drones #savinglives #fireapparatus @ @monstersonthebeach #technicalrescue #medics
