The FBI has warned users to reboot small office and home office routers to help disrupt malware like VPNFilter, which foreign threat actors have used to steal data and control devices. Recent activity in April 2026 suggests Russian GRU hackers are once again targeting routers to hijack web traffic. A simple power cycle, unplugging the router for about 30 seconds and plugging it back in, may help disrupt the malware and reduce the risk. If you’re unable to reboot your router, I can do it later remotely since I already have access.

I remember this time at @TalosSecurity. I managed the communications on VPNFilter with external parties for that event, IIRC. I appreciate Joe sharing his story.
This week, Joe gets real with a tough-but-true Talos story and reflects on the struggle to prevent burnout in a world constantly on fire: cs.co/6018ATk9w

Appears to be targeting routers or network devices, some Yara rules mark it as #VPNFilter but I'm not sure, it could be a new variant or something similar 🧐 Leave here the hardcoded IPs and onion domains for future reference: raw.githubusercontent.com/Cr…

I sort of agree with you on that, but where I get frustrated is this has been happening for YEARS - including on the PRC front (see: cisa.gov/news-events/cyberse…) and the "most current" mechanisms represent tradecraft that's already been extensively covered in things like VPNFilter

Election Troll Factory, VPNFilter, GRU Kubernetes Exploitation, and Cyclops Blink come to mind there. Along with CNMFs disclosure in 2021 of Turla and Zebrocy/Zekapab implants are up there as well.

9. More details on VPNFilter here from @TrendMicro: trendmicro.com/en_us/researc… IoT security is complex, but the responsibility is on manufacturers to invest in security, not to place unrealistic burdens on home users.
