Successful Hands-on Workshop on Droplet Digital PCR (ddPCR) was organised by VRDL, Dept. of Microbiology, AIIMS Guwahati in collaboration with Bio-Rad, with invaluable support from our Executive Director, Prof. Dr Ashok Puranik sir. The workshop brought together 23 participants from VRDLs and premier academic institutes across North East India. Renowned experts led insightful sessions combined with intensive hands-on training, enabling participants to gain practical expertise in advanced ddPCR techniques and emerging technologies. ग्लोबल लेवल पर 'हंटावायरस' (Hantavirus) के मामले लगातार बढ़ रहे हैं। इन बढ़ते हुए मामलों को देखते हुए भारत सरकार और स्वास्थ्य मंत्रालय पूरी तरह अलर्ट हो गया है। स्पेन जा रहे 'एमवी होडियंस' क्रूज शिप पर वायरस के आउटब्रेक और उससे हुई मौतों के बाद भारत ने अपनी बायोसर्विलांस प्रणाली (Biosurveillance System) को एक्टिव कर दिया है। जानकारी के लिए बता दें कि क्रूज शिप पर भारतीय नागरिकों की मौजूदगी ने टेंशन बढ़ा दी है। स्पेन में स्थित Indian Embassy ने पुष्टि की है कि जहाज पर सवार दो भारतीयों को नीदरलैंड्स में 45 दिनों के लिए क्वारंटीन किया गया है। दोनों भारतीयों में कोई लक्षण नजर नहीं आया, लेकिन फिर भी उन्हें निगरानी में रखा गया है। इंडियन काउंसिल ऑफ मेडिकल रिसर्च यानि की ICMR इस संभावित खतरे से निपटने के लिए ने देश भर में मौजूद अपनी 165 वायरस रिसर्च और डायग्नोस्टिक लैब (VRDL) को अलर्ट कर दिया है। यदि विदेश से आने वाले किसी यात्री में लक्षण मिलते हैं, तो इन लैब में तुरंत जांच की जाएगी। कोरोना की तरह हंटावायरस की पहचान भी आरटी-पीसीआर टेस्ट के जरिए की जाएगी, जो वायरस के जेनेटिक मटेरियल (RNA) को पकड़ लेता है। आम तौर पर हंटावायरस संक्रमित चूहों के मल-मूत्र के संपर्क में आने से फैलता है। इसका ह्यूमन-टू-ह्यूमन ट्रांसमिशन (इंसान से इंसान में फैलना) नहीं होता। लेकिन, वैज्ञानिक इसके Andes Strain को लेकर बेहद चिंतित हैं, क्योंकि यह स्ट्रेन एक इंसान से दूसरे में फैल सकता है। इसके चलते WHO ने वैश्विक अलर्ट जारी किया है। #Hantavirus #HealthAlert #WHO #ICMR

CDPH is supporting the national response by fast‑tracking clinical testing capacity for Andes hantavirus samples at its Viral and Rickettsial Disease Laboratory (VRDL). VRDL is the only public health laboratory in the U.S. with a validated diagnostic hantavirus PCR assay. [6/7]

Raised 3 questions in Lok Sabha today, for which the Government responded with the following: • Biosafety Labs & Epidemic Preparedness: India has strengthened its network with 167 VRDLs, including 11 BSL-3 labs, with ₹176.55 cr allocated. Under PM-ABHIM, BSL-4 labs (Nagpur, Dibrugarh) and multiple BSL-3 labs are being developed, including one at Mangalagiri, Andhra Pradesh. In AP, 2 State-level and 7 Medical College labs have been approved. These labs support diagnostics, surveillance and research on emerging diseases like Nipah, Monkeypox, Dengue and COVID-19. • Health Emergency Preparedness & Response (HEPR) Trust Fund: With a USD 1 million allocation (2025–26) under World Bank assistance, the fund supports innovation through ICMR—focusing on research translation (MedTech Mitra), bio-repositories and scientific capacity building. Complementing this, 9 VRDL labs in Andhra Pradesh are strengthening disease surveillance and response systems. • Intensified Mission Indradhanush (IMI): The programme has covered 5.46 crore children and 1.32 crore women across 12 phases. The U-WIN digital platform enables real-time tracking, session planning and beneficiary follow-ups. India’s growing self-reliance in vaccines and institutions like the National Institute of One Health (Nagpur) are further strengthening immunisation and zoonotic disease surveillance.
