Book 7 of 2024
“Dead Inside”
⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ A story of one child caught in the troubled teen industry.
#valreads slowly apparently…well, I finish slowly because I’m in the middle of 10 books. 1st summer read. Looking forward to more time to read daily. 🤩

Hanging In
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
“Too many students internalize a belief that OUR failure to know how to teach them in the moment is actually THEIR failure to learn.” 👏 👏 💥
Highly recommend, especially for those who work with kids in grades 5-12.

Troublemakers
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A reread for class. This book is pure brilliance by @CarlaShalaby. A must read for all early childhood and elementary educators.
“Knowing when and how to challenge authority is a skill worth teaching and learning.” (111)

“Punished For Dreaming”
⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
I have so many pages flagged for further research. This a thorough account of decades of educational reforms. Very informative read.
It reinforced my opinion that Brown v Board had good intent, but a lousy impact.

“Monday’s Not Coming”
A little long and a little slow for YA. My expectations may have been too high after reading “Grown,” by the same author.

📚 My goal for Winter Break was to read 2 professional (grow my brain) books and 2 fun (escape my brain) books.
I’m halfway there.

I did it! An ADULT fiction book, and a GREAT one at that. 🙌 I loved the pacing (something that steers me toward YA). What a well-written book! 💗

This book is described as “a queer contemporary homage to ‘Thelma & Louise’.” I don’t know about that but I loved the writing that allowed me, if only for a while, to escape my world.

“I think of the children who make trouble at school as miners' canaries. I want us to imagine their behaviors…as the loud sound of their suffering and a signal cry to that there is poison in our shared air.”
