Road Safety in the Spotlight: Policy to Action Earlier this year, ChildSafe South Africa convened a landmark Road Safety Seminar in Cape Town, marking the public launch of its policy brief, Reducing Speed, Saving Lives. Drawing from years of on-the-ground learning through the ChildSafe WATCH Project, the brief outlines a clear roadmap for reducing child pedestrian injuries. It calls for enforceable 30 km/h school zones, targeted infrastructure investment, and driver behaviour change initiatives rooted in multisectoral collaboration. As the June school holidays begin, this message is especially urgent. Road crashes remain the leading cause of death among children over the age of five in South Africa, with more than 1,300 children losing their lives every year. These are not accidents; they are preventable tragedies that demand shared responsibility. Widening Access to Trials in Care Homes (WATCH) is a collaborative project led by Prof Roy Soiza at NHS Grampian. It aims to produce best practice guidance to enable the recruitment of care home residents into vaccine trials.
