📢It’s officially one month to go! Ahead of the 18th Wole Soyinka Centre Media Lecture Series, the @WSoyinkaCentre has updated its theme to better reflect today’s democratic realities and the urgent questions shaping public life. The new theme – ‘Beyond the Ballot: Measuring Democracy Through Security, Welfare, Accountability and Public Trust’, moves the conversation beyond elections to what truly defines democracy: how citizens experience security, welfare, accountability, and trust in governance. As Nigeria and the wider democratic world continue to grapple with questions of delivery and public confidence, this year’s lecture will critically examine what democracy looks like beyond the ballot box. Save the dates. 📅 Monday, 13 – Tuesday, 14 July 2026. #WSCLecture #18WSCLecture #WSCLecture2026 #WoleSoyinkaAt92 #CivicSpaceGuard #TruthUnderPressure

“Journalism that must make an impact, must first be local” - a thought often echoed by @MotunrayoAlaka, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer, @WSoyinkaCentre. Long before conversations around grassroots accountability became more prominent in journalism spaces, the 2011 Wole Soyinka Centre Media Lecture Series was already interrogating governance closest to the people. Held in the aftermath of the 2011 elections, the lecture focused on ‘Re-evaluating Local Governance in Nigeria: What responsibilities for the media?’- challenging journalism to look beyond the centre and pay closer attention to the realities shaping local communities. More than a decade later, the conversation remains as urgent as ever. #WSCLecture #18WSCLecture #WSCLecture2026 #WoleSoyinkaAt92

July 13 has come to mean more than a date for us at the @WSoyinkaCentre. It has become an annual moment of reflection, marking Prof. Wole Soyinka’s birthday through conversations on journalism and national life. It is a reminder of journalism’s role in shaping how a country understands itself. At the 2009 #WSCLecture, Dr. Olatunji Dare, Associate Professor of Journalism at Bradley University, Peoria, Illinois, USA, and former editorial page editor of @GuardianNigeria Newspaper, delivered a lecture on ‘Narrating the Nigerian story: the challenges for the media.’ The conversation centred on a question that remains relevant today: how does the media tell Nigeria’s story accurately, responsibly, and with depth? As we prepare for the 18th Wole Soyinka Centre Media Lecture Series, that question returns with greater urgency: who is telling Nigeria’s story today, and how is it being told? #WSCLecture #18WSCLecture #WSCLecture2026 #WoleSoyinkaAt92

It was a room full of urgent reflection, an open question that still feels timely: what role should the media play in fixing elections? At the inaugural Wole Soyinka Centre Media Lecture Series in 2008, held in the aftermath of Nigeria’s 2007 elections, the late Harry Garuba of @UCT_news, offered a perspective that has remained relevant. Journalists, he argued, are not spectators in democracy, but active participants in its struggle for accountability and reform. In that moment, the conversation was not just about elections already held, but about the credibility of the process and the trust it demands. Today, as Nigeria moves once again toward the 2027 election cycle, the question returns with renewed urgency: who shapes the narrative, and who gets to be heard in the democratic process? From 2008 to now, the conversation has not ended; it has only deepened. Save the date: Monday, 13 July 2026, for the 18th #WSCLecture. #WSCLecture #18WSCLecture #WSCLecture2026 #WoleSoyinkaAt92

Established on March 27, 2008, the Wole Soyinka Media Lecture Series is an annual programme of the @WSoyinkaCentre. Since 2009, the lecture has shifted to July 13 to commemorate the birthday of Africa’s first Nobel Laureate in Literature and Grand Patron of the Centre, Professor Wole Soyinka. As showcased in this beautiful retrospective gallery of moments and memories, the lecture series has served as an essential intellectual barometer for the nation, tracking our history directly into 2026. The lecture series was conceived to interrogate critical, topical issues that directly influence the performance of the media, the health of Nigeria's democracy, and the social fabric of the country at large. Over the years, it has brought together a diverse mix of scholars, human rights activists, diplomats, public servants, and political analysts to debate the most pressing issues of our time. Past lectures have boldly explored: •Democratic Accountability & Constitutional Reforms: Leading conversations on "Remaking Nigeria" and the structure of a secure union. •Media Independence & Local Voices: Confronting whether democracy can truly function without a robust sub-national media presence, leading to structural interventions like the Collaborative Media Engagement for Development Inclusivity and Accountability (#CMEDIA) project. •Press Freedom & Global Threats: Addressing modern battlegrounds like institutionalised harassment, digital surveillance, and the creeping silencing of truth. •Socio-Economic Development: Spearheading deep dives into critical citizen needs including basic education, electricity, the tax regime, and resource transparency. As we look back at the faces, the debates, and the milestones that have defined this journey, we are reminded that wherever humanity is involved remains our primary constituency. The fight for a just, transparent, and egalitarian society continues! #WSCLecture #18WSCLecture #WSCLecture2026 #WoleSoyinkaAt92

☺️ The countdown begins! As Nigeria stands on the precipice of another pivotal election year, the role of a free and courageous press has never been more critical to the survival of our democratic social contract. The decisions we make today, the investigations we pursue now, and the civic space we protect this year will determine the integrity of our transition in 2027. This urgent need for media resilience is the bedrock upon which the Wole Soyinka Centre Media Lecture Series was built. Traditionally held to commemorate the birthday of our grand patron, Professor Wole Soyinka, the series has served as a beacon for democratic accountability for nearly two decades. The lecture series remains dedicated to examining varying topical issues that have a reverberating effect on the perceived performance of the media on the health of Nigeria’s democracy and the country at large. The 18th edition will serve as a strategic roadmap for the next generation of truth-seekers. Join us as we examine the media's vital role in our collective democratic future. 🗓️ Date: Monday, 13 July 2026 🔗 Explore our 18-year legacy: lectureseries.wscij.org/the-… #WSCIJ #WSCLecture #WSCLecture2026 #18WSCLecture

"Surveillance is not a distant, abstract issue. It is here. It is shaping the world we live in—across Africa and globally," @angelaquintal said in her keynote address at the #WSCLecture. "Let’s be clear: surveillance isn’t just about technology. It’s about what that technology enables—fear, self-censorship, silence. When journalists are watched, sources dry up. When truth-tellers are harassed, corruption thrives."
