Day 2 of @wlootechweek ✅ I had the chance to attend the @inovia x @GarageCapital x @rbcx event and the Velocity Innovation Open House, where I had the pleasure of meeting some of the most prominent VCs and upcoming founders in the Canadian ecosystem. Here are some 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗽 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗽𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 based on the 1:1 chats and panel discussions 👇 🔹 𝙁𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙈𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙨𝙚𝙩 💸 > Fundraising is not the objective; it’s a means to scale. > Too many startups raise first to validate; rather than validating first and then raising. > Founders should open data rooms to all VCs at once. ⚡ Momentum is everything. 🔹 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧 - 𝙑𝘾 𝘿𝙮𝙣𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙘 🤝 >Early-stage investing is about understanding the founder more than the product. > VCs know when founders B.S. their way through questions: honesty > “perfect” answers. > Founders prefer VCs who give passive, not active, heavy-handed advice. > Comfort and trust matter more than background or pedigree. 🔹 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙩𝙨 𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙒𝙞𝙣 🏆 > Frugality is key in deep-tech, where pivots are frequent and returns are long-dated. > Timing and luck matter at times: saying the right thing at the right time can unlock deals. ⏱️ > Don’t over-hire until product-market fit (unless you’re in talent-heavy deep tech like robotics or aerospace). > Hire unproven but hungry talent 🔥 and grow together. 🔹 𝙑𝘾 𝙀𝙘𝙤𝙨𝙮𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙢 & 𝙊𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮 🌎 > Robotics, autonomy, and hard-tech are increasingly attractive bets 🤖. > The Canadian VC ecosystem is growing, but is still less competitive; deep-tech startups risk running out of capital if they only raise locally. The strongest path is a mix of Canadian US capital. > A hidden VC challenge: backing already-successful but bootstrapped companies that have never raised. ✨ 𝙈𝙮 𝙗𝙞𝙜𝙜𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙮? > The best founders and VCs build networks, relationships, and reputations before they “need” them.
