An El Nino in 1899-00 sparked Sir Gilbert Walker's interest in the Southern Oscillation, which he published on in the 1930s. The "Walker Cell" as we know it today may be very different w/o the 1899-00 Nino. Here's SSTa animation for this El Nino, using the mean of 7 SST datasets:
