As we head toward the May 2026 Senedd election, the "One Million Speakers" target and the Senedd expansion are no longer just policies, they are the biggest battlegrounds in Welsh politics. The latest YouGov and More in Common polls (March 2026) reveal a nation deeply divided: Funding Gap: While 67% of the public generally support the Welsh language, only 22% believe the "Cymraeg 2050" target is actually achievable. Priorities vs. Projects: With the Senedd expansion costs hitting £102M, a growing majority now rank "Language Promotion" and "Senedd Reform" as low priorities compared to the NHS and Economy. Political Split: Plaid Cymru leads among fluent speakers (59%), positioning the projects as vital for national survival. Reform UK has surged to a 26-31% vote share by promising to scrap the 2050 target and the new Education Act entirely, calling them "costly vanity projects."
