People do insane things when money is tight. Remember back during the depression people would people actually boiled dandelions for soup, families were forced to slaughter their horses and mules - not out of cruelty, but because it was meat or starvation, others caught and cooked rats, sparrows, and pigeons, outside diners or butcher shops, people would dig through animal feed or trash buckets for bones, scraps, or bread heels. Others left infants on church steps with notes that said "please feed him." Since the Great Depression, the U.S. built up social safety net systems - from Social Security and Medicaid to SNAP, Head Start, and nonprofit support. But under the Trump administration (specifically his second term), many of those protections were significantly weakened with "One Big Beautiful Bill." Unemployment rate was around 20%....
