💬 Session Update:
Dr. Nonso
@CIVICUSalliance joined 14 local and national actors from seven regions of Uganda online to share his expertise in the discussions around the co-creation phase of the local leadership labs project; with emphasis on having affected communities/persons at the center of the co-creation process.
He emphasized the power of community partnership, urging participants to view communities not as beneficiaries but as true partners in identifying and solving local challenges. Dr. Nonso highlighted that co-creation is a journey, one built on trust, shared understanding, and participant-led processes.
A key takeaway from his sharing was the Mental Models to Believe in Co-Creation Summarized as below:
1. Shift from research subjects to collaborators — do not see them as end users (community).
2. Stop seeing affected persons as beneficiaries but as colleagues.
3. Affected communities cannot be respondents but partners.
4. Build a shared understanding between you as a co-convener as the participating community members; For purpose of the work, define certain terminologies (clear out feel edges).
5. Ensure it is participant-led — think of their own availability, technological access, not yours; not foreign approaches that people are not comfortable with. Understand the community you’re co-creating with.
As part of the next steps, local and national actors will: ✅ Co-conveners take leadership of the co-creation process.
✅ Map out a co-creation calendar to guide the journey ahead using the five Mental Model to co-creation. ✅ Document prototypes and prioritize key community solutions for action at local, in partnerships and external support.
The session inspired a renewed commitment to doing, learning, and leading collaboratively — ensuring that co-creation remains at the heart of locally led development with affected persons at the center of the process. 🌍🤝
