One idea from a recent post caught my attention: why would anyone be offended by Taehyung wanting to make a pop album?
The question reveals something interesting about how we think about music.
For many people, "pop" is no longer simply a genre. It functions as a proxy for other assumptions: commercial, mainstream, accessible, predictable. The issue isn't that these associations exist. It's that they're often treated as measures of artistic value.
Somewhere along the way, popularity and artistic legitimacy came to be treated as opposites. The more widely something is enjoyed, the more likely it is to be viewed with suspicion as serious art.
Yet experimentation, originality, aesthetic vision and creative risk are not properties of genre; they can exist within pop just as easily as within jazz, soul or classical music.
Which leaves a question worth asking: why do we so often treat popularity as evidence against artistic value?
13 Years: The Next Chapter of an Artist Without Limits
After Kim Taehyung's interview with Rolling Stone, I received the following question:
“How do you feel now that your little jazz, R&B, and soul artist said he's going to make a pop album?”
Putting aside the insults hidden in that question, I actually felt flattered. Tae talked about his musical aspirations, and somehow that person immediately thought of me. What I didn't understand was why Taehyung sharing plans for his solo musical career was supposed to be offensive to me.
Anyone else with me on this?
Because of pop?
A pop album performed through Taehyung's voice, aesthetic vision, versatility, and melodic, harmonic, and visual creative genius?
Ladies and gentlemen, I can hardly wait to hear and witness, in real time, Taehyung redefining what pop can be. You have no idea what I believe Tae is capable of creating. 🤯
I'll go even further:
❝ True artists are not interesting only because of what they have already done. They are interesting because of what they are still capable of imagining and creating. ❞
There are two quotes from Taehyung that fascinate me and fill me with anticipation:
“The sky is still the limit for the music I want to create,” and “If I have zero desire, shouldn't I stop being an artist?”
Kim Taehyung is an artist of innovation and risk. A creator who experiments with sounds, blends genres, and challenges conventions.
He continues to generate excitement because his artistry never seems limited to a single form of expression. Whether through music, visual language, performance, or storytelling, there is always the sense that he is exploring possibilities that have not yet been fully revealed. It is this combination of talent, creative curiosity, and authenticity that transforms a relevant artist into a generational reference.
Remember this:
❝ Decades from now, when future generations seek to understand how art, music, digital culture, performance, and artistic identity intersected in the early twenty-first century, Kim Taehyung will be one of the names that must be studied.
