Funny how #C64BASIC executes the POKE, then complains of the SYNTAX ERROR. Presumably the parser interprets any non-number as the end of the statement, and then checks if it's valid later. #C64

The 2nd parameter is logically ANDed with the contents of location 198, and if any bit is non-zero, the WAIT is over. 255 AND 1 = 1 so the condition is met. Here's the equivalent in #C64BASIC without using WAIT:
