His name is Jatin Mehta.
He ran a diamond and jewellery empire. His flagship company was called Winsome Diamonds and Jewellery, along with a sister firm, Forever Precious.
For years, they were among the larger names in India’s gold and diamond trade.
The way the business was funded is the heart of the story.
Around 2008, a group of Indian banks arranged for large quantities of gold to be supplied to his companies by international bullion banks. The Indian banks acted as guarantors.
The arrangement was simple.
If Mehta’s companies failed to pay the foreign suppliers for the gold, the Indian banks would have to step in and pay instead.
Much of that money ultimately came from public sector banks, funded by ordinary depositors.
By 2013, his companies stopped paying.
The default amounted to around seven thousand crore rupees.
When the banks asked where the money had gone, Mehta’s side said that thirteen overseas buyers in the UAE had failed to pay him and that he had simply passed the losses on.
Investigators later alleged something very different.
They claimed the buyers were not independent companies at all, but part of a network of shell entities linked to interests controlled by the Mehta family. They further alleged that funds had been routed through multiple countries.
By the time agencies in India moved, Jatin Mehta and his family had already left the country.
In 2014, he acquired citizenship of the Caribbean nation of St Kitts and Nevis.
Indian agencies later declared him a wilful defaulter and a fugitive economic offender. Cases were filed and properties were attached.
Very little of the money has ever been recovered.
Years later, a court in the United Kingdom froze assets worth close to a billion dollars linked to the family, stating there was strong evidence of fraud.
The family denies any wrongdoing.
Jatin Mehta is often mentioned alongside Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi as one of the businessmen who left India owing banks thousands of crores.
His name is simply the least famous of the three.

Nurses must follow these 10 core provisions:
1. Practice with compassion and respect for every person’s dignity.
2. Primary commitment is to the patient (individual, family, or community).
3. Advocate for patients’ rights, health, and safety.
4. Be responsible and accountable for your practice.
5. Show moral respect for yourself — including self-care and a safe workplace.

تمثل المدونات الأخلاقية الإطار الرسمي الذي تُوثَّق فيه القيم والمبادئ والمعايير التي توجه سلوك المنظمة وأفرادها، بحيث لا تُترك الأخلاق للاجتهادات الفردية، بل تتحول إلى مرجعية واضحة تضبط القرارات والتصرفات. والفكرة الجوهرية أن الأخلاق المؤسسية لا تُدار بالنيات، بل تُدار بالأنظمة الموثقة والمطبقة.
في بيئة الأعمال المعاصرة، حيث تتعقد القرارات وتتداخل المصالح، أصبحت المدونات الأخلاقية ضرورة تنظيمية وليست خيارًا، إذ توفر معيارًا موحدًا للسلوك، وتقلل من الغموض في المواقف الأخلاقية، وتدعم جودة القرار الإداري، كما تعزز ثقة أصحاب المصالح وتحمي المنظمة من المخاطر القانونية والسمعة السلبية.
وتؤدي المدونة الأخلاقية دورًا متعدد الأبعاد، فهي مرجع رسمي يُستند إليه في اتخاذ القرار، ودليل إرشادي يساعد في معالجة الإشكاليات الأخلاقية، وأداة لضبط السلوك، وإطار يستخدم في تقييم الأداء والتحقيق في المخالفات. كما أنها تترجم القيم المؤسسية إلى قواعد عملية قابلة للتطبيق في مختلف المواقف.
وتتضمن المدونات الأخلاقية عادة مكونات أساسية مثل القيم الجوهرية، والمبادئ العامة، وقواعد السلوك، ومعايير التعامل، وضوابط اتخاذ القرار، وتشمل مجالات متعددة كالنزاهة، والشفافية، والعدالة، والمسؤولية، واحترام الآخرين. وهذه المكونات تشكل البنية التي تُبنى عليها الثقافة الأخلاقية داخل المنظمة.
غير أن التحدي الحقيقي لا يكمن في صياغة المدونة، بل في تفعيلها، إذ إن كثيرًا من المنظمات تمتلك مدونات أخلاقية جيدة من حيث الشكل، لكنها تفتقد التأثير لأنها لا تُمارس في الواقع. فالمدونة غير المفعلة تبقى وثيقة شكلية، بينما المدونة المفعلة تتحول إلى سلوك يومي ينعكس في القرارات والتعاملات.
ويتطلب تفعيل المدونة نشرها بوضوح، وتدريب العاملين عليها، وربطها بالممارسات اليومية، ودمجها في تقييم الأداء، وتطبيقها بعدالة على جميع المستويات، إضافة إلى وجود آليات رقابة ومساءلة تضمن الالتزام بها. فالتطبيق المتسق هو الذي يمنح المدونة مصداقيتها.
ويُقاس نجاح المدونة الأخلاقية بمدى استخدامها الفعلي في اتخاذ القرار، وتطبيقها على الجميع دون استثناء، وقدرتها على تقليل المخالفات، وتعزيز الثقة داخل المنظمة وخارجها.
التحول الإداري الحقيقي يتمثل في الانتقال من النظر إلى المدونة كوثيقة رسمية، إلى اعتبارها أداة استراتيجية لبناء الثقافة، وتوجيه السلوك، وتعزيز الحوكمة.
والحقيقة التي تؤكدها التجارب أن القيم التي لا تُترجم إلى أنظمة، تبقى شعارات، والأنظمة التي لا تُفعل، تفقد أثرها.
وفي النهاية، فإن المدونة الأخلاقية الفاعلة هي التي تتحول من نص مكتوب إلى ممارسة يومية، ومن توجيه نظري إلى سلوك مؤسسي راسخ.

Landmark Changes in ICAI Code of Ethics strengthening the CA profession.
The ICAI has introduced progressive reforms in the Code of Ethics, empowering practicing Chartered Accountants to operate with greater transparency, visibility and modern relevance while safeguarding professional independence.
Key Highlights
CA firms can now conduct educational programs, both physical and virtual, for their own staff and clients, staff of other CA firms and acquaintances.
Online visibility is now permitted on platforms such as GeM, IndiaMART and Upwork, limited to non-audit services.
Podcasts and educational audio content may mention both the member name and the firm name.
Firm websites may disclose network affiliations, Peer Review status and AQMM levels.
Firm event photographs are now permitted on websites and social media platforms.
Client names may be mentioned on websites for all services. Client names and assignments may both be mentioned for non-exclusive services, subject to client consent.
Audit fees must be accepted only through digital modes.
Members are now permitted to engage in transactions in securities, subject to independence requirements.
Non-audit services may be promoted through websites in push mode.
Firm name may be used in write-ups for press, media, films and social media platforms.
AI Consulting Services have been formally included under Management Consultancy Services (MCS).
These reforms reflect ICAI’s commitment to modernising the profession and enabling Chartered Accountants to adapt to digital platforms, emerging technologies and evolving client expectations while upholding the highest ethical standards.
