Beyond Boundaries: HKUST Unveils “SURREALITY” – The World’s First Large-Scale, Cross-Regional MR × AI Art Exhibition in Hong Kong
To celebrate the 35th anniversary of HKUST, we are thrilled to announce the launch of “SURREALITY,” the world’s first large-scale, cross-regional mixed reality (MR) × artificial intelligence (AI) art exhibition. This groundbreaking showcase will begin with an exclusive preview for media and invited guests at HKUST’s Clear Water Bay campus on June 16. From there, the exhibition will travel to HKUST’s Guangzhou campus the following day, where it will remain on display through the end of July. And that’s not all— “SURREALITY” is also scheduled to be staged in Hong Kong by HKUST in the latter part of 2026, so please stay tuned for more details.
At the heart of “SURREALITY” lies a seamless integration of mixed reality and artificial intelligence—technologies that together connect the HKUST's two campuses in a shared immersive journey. This is an experience shaped by the dynamic intersection of technology, surreal art, and cross-campus collaboration, inviting audiences to step into a world where the virtual and the physical become indistinguishable.
As a highlight of HKUST’s 35th anniversary celebrations, the exclusive preview is co-hosted by HKUST and the Center for Metaverse and Computational Creativity at HKUST (GZ). The Clear Water Bay campus will feature a curated selection of digital artworks by acclaimed international and Mainland Chinese artists. Through digital art, spatial installations, and AI-generated video works, “SURREALITY” explores how technology is fundamentally reshaping artistic creation, the way we view art, and even our very senses and perception.
What makes “SURREALITY” truly revolutionary is its use of MR technology to open a virtual portal bridging the two HKUST campuses, enabling instant travel between virtual scenes across Clear Water Bay and Guangzhou. Among the visually striking works is Kunpeng, depicting a mythical ascent from the sea near HKUST into the boundless sky. The exhibition also presents virtual reality (VR) digital art projects, including a space exploration experience, an Alzheimer’s awareness interactive game, and the animated work The Cat Ghost, among others.
“SURREALITY” serves as a living laboratory for advancing research in the metaverse and computational creativity, demonstrating the fusion of digital art and innovative technology. Several distinguished participating artists, including recipients of Emmy Awards, IDA International Design Awards and the Venice Immersive Grand Prize, will attend in person to introduce their works. The exhibition also fosters cross-regional cultural and artistic exchange, while highlighting Hong Kong’s role as an East-meets-West hub for international cultural dialogue and a global centre for innovation and technology.
Join us as we step into the future of art, powered by AI and MR, and celebrate 35 years of HKUST innovation without borders.
