I caught a bus to Stansted and flew to Spain to spend Christmas in my hometown. For those who’ve completed a PhD, you know it marks the end of an intense chapter in life—much like selling a company (more on that below). Although my “viva” (the name of the oral defense at Cambridge) came a few months later, by then I had already mentally moved on. Dec 24th 2014 - Christmas alone: Exactly 10 years ago, on Christmas Eve, I faced one of the sacrifices entrepreneurship sometimes demands. My wife, pregnant with our first child, had flown to Spain, but I had to cancel my own trip at the last minute. For hundreds of us at Coverwallet, it marked a life-changing moment, a "before and after" in our journey. 1924-2024: This year, my father would have turned 100. I dedicated my PhD thesis to him (see the second page below) because my achievements were also his—he never had the chance to go to school, not even primary school. He passed away last year at the age of 99 (good genes), leaving behind a legacy of resilience and inspiration. This is the second Christmas without him, and the first one for me, as last year I had COVID and spent Christmas Eve in bed.
