I think they're going for an occult-meets-noir vibe, hence why so many games revolve around the Kuzunoha, detectives, and a shadow war with another mysterious organization. The problem, for me, is that I'm much more enticed by the romanticized Western noir than what DevSum offers

yeah it having 2d art from across the series combined with guest artists results in a shittonne of variety its kinda crazy
you got stuff like Gryphon from all the way back in smt1, to a lotta devsum/soulhackers stuff that isnt in 3D, to insane new guest artist demons

I think the core issue for me less comes down directly to long dev cycles, and more that the long dev cycles mean they barely have variety outside of those major projects
Like SMT3 languished in the ideas stage for years, but DevSum and Persona were made during that time

Possible. Though some demons like Odin also got a whole new (and in my opinion the best) design in Soul Hackers. Kaneko was firing at all cylinders
Although iirc DevSum was when Soejima showed Kaneko how to digitally airbrush which where the heavy shading of the late 90s began
