What you're hearing is the echo of an old, narrow definition of QA dying. Let's break down the reality. The role that is fading is the old model: - The "Gatekeeper" at the end of the cycle who simply executes a manual test script. - The isolated tester who works in a separate team, throwing bugs "over the wall" to developers. - The solely manual tester with no understanding of code, automation, or the development pipeline. This model is inefficient in today's world of Agile, DevOps, and CI/CD, where the goal is to release fast and with high quality. Quality is more critical than ever. Software is in everything from your car to your fridge. The cost of failure is huge. Therefore, the need for deep, specialized quality expertise is exploding, but its form is changing. You're not just assuring quality by checking outputs; you're engineering quality into the process from the start. Automation is a powerful tool, not the goal itself. Understand how APIs work. Specialize strategically: Don't just learn Selenium. Focus on the "Why": Automate what provides the fastest feedback (unit, API, smoke tests). Your brain is for complex, exploratory testing. Embrace Technical and Domain Depth Understand basic architecture Become the go-to expert for your product's business logic. Specialize in High-Value Areas: Security Testing Accessibility Testing Data Quality & QA DevTestOps Test Architecture
