I am very happy to share that my dialectology/ dialectometry workshop series has ended on a high note! We went through some contemporary approaches around the world, incl. modern field methods, explanatory and tonal dialectometry, comparison of different linguistic levels etc.

Today, we looked at corpus-based approaches in dialectometry. I gave my students a variety of texts and asked them to come up with ways to compare dialects, followed by going through existing ways in doing corpus dialectometry, including works from @JWGrieve and my own.

In today's dialectometry workshop, we looked at how to classify dialects using cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling. After introducing these methods, I did a demo using a dialectometric app I wrote, on @j_prokic's Bulgarian data.

Just gave a presentation online at the 29th International Conference on Yue Dialects. I talked about using computational methods to blend dialectometry and sociolinguistics in order to study Yue dialect changes in real- and apparent-time (3 generations).

The idea of a Kombinationskarte can go back to Haag (1898). Since then, more maps of this kind came in later studies, like Atwood (1955, Walloon) and Glauser (1974, Scottish-English). Later on, dialectometry led by Goebl also adapted these maps and named them honeycomb maps.

There is also amerru in eastern Kabylia (Tasahlit) In general (not specifically here) in Kabyle dialectometry works, Tasahlit should be removed because it is a different language from Tazwawt (as Taamousht which was not included) and data are always missing (here north of Ssṭif)

My supervisor (@j_prokic) and I have been using multiple sequence alignment in dialectometry to investigate phonetic variation. Today, I read a paper by Atwood (1955), and it was a pleasant surprise to see that a very similar technique was already used.

Today I gave a guest lecture on computatiobal approaches to language variation. I gave an overview on dialectometry, computational socioling and histling, as well as quantitative typology to 1st year students. I even used the blackboard to explain some concepts 😄

Our latest paper on tonal dialectometry is out! We explored: 1) whether tonal variation forms a geographical dialect continuum & 2) to what extent is tonal variation correlated with segmental correlation. You can find our paper here: mdpi.com/2226-471X/9/12/378 @j_prokic
