🙊SPEAK NO EVIL🙊 I just finished this 2024 remake of the 2022 Dutch film of the same title. This film is primarily an exploration of civility vs barbarism and a juxtaposition between ancient modes of masculinity facing up against the castrated masculinity of the postmodern West. Its themes in some ways mirror the shift we’ve seen within the hobby, namely a marked migration to a Disneyfied and sanitized version of mythos in which an overly simplified morality and narrative are given greater weight than true adventure and confrontation with real evil. This is primarily explored through the father, Ben’s, failure to confront the antagonist, Paddy, resulting in his family’s safety being compromised. Analogously, I would argue Phandelver’s Black Spider lacks the wretchedness of Iuz and Lolth, precisely the sadism and carnal evil that Paddy embodies in this film. In a way, the film beckons one to integrate their shadow, in the sense of confronting the possibility of true evil in oneself, so they can recognize this capacity in others. Ben’s refusal to see beyond his domesticated self becomes a liability to those he loves, as it prevents him from seeing Paddy for who he truly is. This is symbolically shown in the fact that Ben almost dies by being impaled by a shard of mirror, representing his failure to confront and see himself. In many ways this parallels the message of Kubrick’s “The Shining” and 2008’s “The Strangers.” Dungeon Masters can use this message to great effect through well executed NPC betrayals and even secret evil PCs if a player is on board. Don’t dial down evil in your games, it is essential that players actually destroy wickedness and confront their capacity to succumb to it themselves #dndtips #dmtips #gmtips

🎳GUARD RAILS🎳 You don’t have much patience for dead ends. Think about it—few entertaining stories involve the protagonists pursuing red herrings for half the plot… or bartering for a better price on plate mail. D&D is more susceptible to these detours because their characters are piloted by ADHD apes with a penchant for undramatic: game-fuelled downtime—like shopping, fighting and tomfoolery. Yet, the desire for plot movers doesn’t disappear because Dungeon Masters KNOW when a story is lagging. So we put up guard rails, ensuring that no matter what a pin will drop. No matter what you do in a video game like Baulder’s Gate, the exciting, god slaying narrative progresses. What we are really talking about when we daydream of a more engaged player base is one capable of asking momentous questions. The right kind of curiosity as it were. So perhaps we need to explicitly cultivate that curiosity: ask your players to pause and generate an “I wonder” list. If they don’t wonder, they’re on a rollercoaster and you’re stuck forcing their hand. Guard rails aren’t bad, they ensure that the game doesn’t get stuck with a bunch of gutter balls. But a comparatively better scenario would be one in which the players need to figure out what juicy questions they have, and base their goals around ANSWERING those mysteries. That’s their side of the equation. Yours is to ensure that the road to answering those questions is challenging and exciting. If they ask why the dragon is targeting the elves, don’t let them get away with searching a library and offering a lore drop. Tell them an old hag in the north was the only survivor of the first attack, write in a centaur ambush on the road leading that direction, and have the hag have PTSD and only being willing to share if they bring her a froghemoth’s eyestalk. Then when they do, make sure you reward it with cascading lore and a treat. Perhaps the dragon was once an elf and seeks revenge against those with a green banner (lure they can use) and then the hag offers the group a flask of flamingo tequila that causes a limb to shrivel—a key weapon they can use to ground the dragon. Wonder leads to quest, quest leads to edge. #dnd #dndtips #gmtips

Game Mastering 101 •ENTRENCHMENT• One of the challenges of DMing is meta awareness—figuring out what you don’t know or what you don’t do. The quick solution has always been direct instruction—throwing on some Hankerin or Colville for fresh takes. But inevitably, you’ll find that your games slip into some kind of patterned structure. Maybe it’s the way of the NPCs act, the monster behaviour, or your rulings on rolls. Our brains are efficient and like to save energy on processing wherever possible, so they opt for programs over live feedback loops. This is not a problem per se, but can lead to predictable or withering games—both you and your players sense when you’re watching a rerun vs a live match. What’s the solution? I truly think it’s attention. If you aren’t boxing out space for reflection, feedback, journaling or blogging, you know that your grey lump in the skullcase is more than willing to engage a tried-and-true algorithm. So, here’s the action to fix it: •before a session brainstorm 3 new things you’re going to try: a flirtatious NPC, a meek monster, a new thieves tools mechanic. Then, do it! 90% will flop but 10% will shift your game, get people reengaged, and keep you sharp instead of programmed #dnd #dndtips #gamemaster
