The first time I felt that embarrassment was in Paris in November 2014, when I spoke at dotCSS, attended dotJS & saw Motörhead live for what would sadly turn out to be the last time.
Paris Métro, me lost in my own world, when I heard a torrent of Romanian profanity & threats...

That talk is one of the 'canonical' utility-first talks for me personally, alongside Sarah Dayan's dotCSS talk, Adams 'separation of concerns' blog post, youtu.be/uHVqbCPnOwU and mrmrs.cc/writing/scalable-cs… and johnpolacek.github.io/rethin…. All stuff that helped me get interested in UF

I’ve given my first talk in English at @dotCSS in 2014, about 6 months *before* I moved to Berlin and started actually speaking English on a daily basis. My accent was thicc and my pronunciation quite messy but heh. Ultimately it didn’t matter and I had fun. Take the leap! ✨

I've had chats with people who feel self conscious about public speaking because English isn't their first language. The fact that we can do talks in our second language is AMAZING. People don't (& shouldn't) care about accents or pronunciation, they care about your content 🙌🏽
