I didn't cook anything (except EasyMac and frozen pizzas) until I started my PhD. I am now probably the best cook in my social circle and live very frugally. It's possible to make an incredibly delicious, healthy meal, from borderline garbage (scraps, leftovers) for <$1/dish.
My hottest take is that the two most important classes in any public highschool are gym and home economics
