The old Range Rover Sport SVR made its mark with theatrics and brute force. More than 26,000 sold worldwide, and the supercharged V8 barked and cracked on every lift of the throttle. It was fast and fun, but never subtle.
The new Range Rover Sport SV takes a very different path. Out goes the 5.0-litre V8 and in comes a BMW-derived 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 626 hp (467 kW) and 750 Nm, making it the most powerful Range Rover yet. Zero to 100 km/h takes just 3.6 seconds, and it will top out at 290 km/h. It's faster, cleaner, and smoother than the SVR, but unfortunately, a lot less savage in its soundtrack.
The real breakthrough lies beneath the surface. A new '6D dynamics' hydraulic suspension system allows the SV to resist roll, dive, and squat in ways no SUV of this size should manage. Sharper steering, rear-wheel steering, and an SV drive mode transform it into something that feels more like a sports saloon than a luxury SUV.
Visually, the SV plays it cool with wider arches, deeper bumpers, and quad exhausts. Inside, you'll find unique seats, subtle SV branding, chopped carbon finishes, and acrylic paddle shifters.
The Range Rover Sport SV is less about fireworks and more about sophistication. It combines potent performance, impressive handling, and long-distance comfort in a package that moves Land Rover firmly into the company of Aston Martin, Lamborghini, and Ferrari. It's still a pretty ludicrous SUV, but now one that balances muscle with maturity.
Pricing starts at R3.5m, but we were fortunate enough to pilot the special EDITION TWO (23 units for SA) version finished in the gorgeous Blue Nebula Matte, which commands a whopping R4.2m.
