Ethereum Validator Key Management via DDH-Based Exponent Verifiable Random Functions (eVRF) By: - Yecheke Bonya Oryn Bonya - Antonio Sanso 🔗 ethresear.ch/t/22948 Highlights: - The eVRF provides a way to generate random outputs that are both unpredictable and verifiable, which is crucial for selecting validators in Ethereum's Proof-of-Stake system. - The implementation uses two elliptic curves, BLS12-381 and Bandersnatch, to ensure efficient computations and compatibility with Ethereum's existing cryptographic infrastructure. - By using a master key from which all validator keys are derived, the new method reduces the complexity of key management from O(n) to O(1), making it easier to manage large numbers of keys. - The system enhances security by minimizing the attack surface, as only one master key needs to be stored instead of multiple individual keys for each validator. - The approach also supports compliance and auditability, ensuring that the key generation process can be verified without compromising security. ELI5: This research focuses on improving how Ethereum manages the keys used by validators (the people who help secure the network) by using a special type of random number generator called an eVRF. This method makes it easier and safer to handle many keys without exposing sensitive information.
