March 2026.
N.B. We telephoned Exploris about the stranded seal pup at Ramore Head & we later found out she had been rescued and is currently in their care. 🦭
Today is a big day for me!
After 10 years of loyalty to @thenorthface (and I’m still loyal in clothing, backpack, gear etc.), I had to make a change – for hikes 50 km I switched to a different shoe brand.
Thanks to @4camping
I could try 8 pairs – various @altrarunning and Topo.
The Altra Lone Peak 9 offered even more room in the forefoot, but I just couldn’t get used to the 0 mm drop during testing.
In the end, I chose Topo Athletic Terraventure 4 WP (size 45).
Why these?
•Significantly wider forefoot (toe box) – finally room for swelling after 50 km, no pressure on toes like in my old TNF Exploris II.
•3 mm drop – perfect compromise for me between natural stride and stability on long stages.
•Vibram Megagrip outsole – great grip on mud, wet rocks, everything.
•eVent membrane – feet stay dry even in fall/spring rain and stream crossings.
First tests done and it looks promising. Now waiting for the first proper non-stop 50 km to see how it holds up.
Who else has struggled with narrow shoes on long treks? Or any experience with Topo / Altra zero-drop? Let me know! #longhikes#trailrunning#topoathletic#terraventure#4camping#altrarunning#thenorthface

Year 13 Biology students visited Portaferry to conduct a seaweed study 🌿
During the fieldwork, students investigated the rocky shore, identifying various types of seaweed and examining how each species is uniquely adapted to its environment. This hands-on experience deepened their understanding of ecological principles and marine biodiversity.
To round off the trip, students enjoyed an educational tour of Exploris Aquarium, where they had the opportunity to observe a wide range of marine life up close and learn more about the local marine ecosystem. 🐠
It’s fitting that the Lumos was released 10 years ago this month. All Orbitrap instruments from the last decade benefit from this (we used an Exploris 480). Setup is easy with our extensive supplementary data and example method files are on our website: searlelab.org/resources/mapm…
