I was reading an account of Fijian religious practices and it said they would dig a pit several feet wide and a few feet deep, fill it with stones and burn wood on it for 5-6 hours before adorning themselves in "gay regalia" and firewalking on the pit.
Of course I know that the phrase "gay regalia" just refers to the type of garments worn ceremonially which were festive and adorned with emblems. But if you google "gay regalia" for a definition you might be confused in thinking Fijians were celebrating some kind of Gay Pride.
This is how semantic drift changes the meaning of history and why ancient texts can't be taken at face value.
