Steve Nicol never got the headlines that some of his teammates did.
But ask anyone who watched Liverpool properly in the 1980s, and they'll tell you exactly how important he was.
Because players like Steve Nicol don't come around very often.
He wasn't just a right-back.
He wasn't just a midfielder.
He wasn't just a utility player.
He was whatever Liverpool needed him to be.
And more often than not, he delivered.
Signed from Ayr United in 1981, Nicol arrived at Anfield as a young Scottish lad with plenty to prove.
What followed was one of the most underrated careers in Liverpool history.
Nearly 500 appearances.
Multiple league titles.
European success.
Domestic cups.
And a reputation as one of the most reliable footballers the club had during one of its greatest eras.
The thing that made Nicol special wasn't flashy skill or endless media attention.
It was trust.
Managers trusted him.
Teammates trusted him.
Supporters trusted him.
Because whether he was playing at right-back, left-back, in midfield, or filling a gap somewhere else, you knew exactly what you were getting.
Commitment.
Intensity.
And total dedication to the shirt.
Then came one of the most unforgettable afternoons of his career.
19 September 1987.
St James' Park.
Liverpool against Newcastle United.
Away from home.
Tough atmosphere.
Big challenge.
And somehow the defender everyone labelled a utility man ended up stealing the entire show.
Steve Nicol scored a hat-trick.
A hat-trick.
From a player most people associated with defensive work.
Liverpool won 4-1 and Nicol was everywhere.
Driving forward.
Finding space.
Finishing clinically.
Producing one of the most remarkable individual performances of that First Division era.
It perfectly summed him up.
You never quite knew what he was going to do next.
Only that he'd do whatever the team required.
That's why the "jack of all trades" label never really fit.
For some people, it sounded like an insult.
For Liverpool supporters, it was a compliment.
Because being able to perform at a top level in multiple positions isn't a weakness.
It's a gift.
And Nicol had that gift in abundance.
His crowning individual achievement arrived in 1989 when he won the FWA Footballer of the Year award.
Not because he dominated one position.
Because he dominated wherever Liverpool asked him to play.
That takes a special mentality.
No complaints.
No ego.
No excuses.
Just football.
Just winning.
Just doing the job.
And doing it better than almost anyone else.
Modern football loves specialists.
Steve Nicol was something different.
A footballer intelligent enough to adapt.
Tough enough to compete.
And selfless enough to put the team before himself every single week.
That's why Liverpool fans still speak about him with enormous respect.
Not because he shouted the loudest.
Not because he chased attention.
But because he embodied everything supporters admire.
Hard work.
Versatility.
Commitment.
And an unwavering desire to win.
