Hey Joanne,
I believe that you're already on the East Coast, thus you may not mind the humidity. A friend of mine moved from NJ to the Daytona Beach area. He seems to really like it.
If you're looking into retirement, then I would certainly consider the following.
- Affordable housing. This is the real challenge as home prices have increased everywhere. Even small towns are getting ridiculous.
- State Income tax on social security and pension/IRA dist.
- Property tax, it will cost more to live in large cities because of the school districts. If you like Halmark towns, they tend to have lower property tax. Although, I understand that FL is looking to do away with property taxes.
- Natural disaster areas will have higher property insurance.
- Although this may not be a big deal, sales tax can be hefty in some states.
I'm looking to move out of Washington State simply because they are running it into the ground like most other blue states. I like ID, but it's a challenge finding a good climate that's not too hot or a winter too long.
I believe that Arkansas, Tenn, FL, Caralina's, and maybe TX if you can take the heat.
I hope this helps, and you're always welcome to ask for additional insights if you need.
