Standing on the Shoulders of Giants: A Journey in Rowing Excellence
Rowing is a sport that demands not only physical strength but also mental resilience, strategy, and the guidance of exceptional mentors. I’ve been fortunate to have had some of the best coaches in the world shape my journey from a young rower to an Olympic champion and now, an elite rowing coach.
My first junior coach, Michel Colard, was a national champion in the single scull at the elite level and later became a national team coach for France. His dedication to the sport and his athletes was unparalleled, setting a strong foundation for my rowing career.
Next, I had the privilege of being coached by Jean Pierre Leroux, who guided American single sculler Anne Marden to an Olympic silver medal at the 1988 Olympics. His insights into the sport deepened my understanding of what it takes to excel at the highest levels.
When I was 16, Harry Mahon, the legendary coach from New Zealand, took me under his wing. His influence was profound, coaching me until I was 20 and ready to compete in my first Olympics. Harry’s visits to Brown University were special, where he met my freshman coach, Scott Roop—world champion in the single scull—and Steve Gladstone, the most victorious collegiate rowing coach to date.
After Harry Mahon passed the baton to Marty Aiken, I reached new heights in my career, winning the 1996 Olympic gold medal and adding two additional world silver medals and my final Olympics silver medal in 2000.
This extraordinary team of coaches and supporters shaped who I became as a competitor and as an elite rowing coach over the last 22 years. Their wisdom and dedication inspired me to pursue excellence, not only in my athletic endeavors but also in my coaching. I’m passionate about building stronger characters through rowing, seeing the maximal potential in every athlete I coach.
No matter your size or your current erg score, there is always room for improvement. On the water, the right rigging can turn size into an advantage—a detail often neglected by many club rowing coaches. As I continue to mature in my coaching career, I discover new subtleties and strategies that make a significant impact.
Time is of the essence. There’s so much to accomplish and many young rowers to guide from high school to collegiate powerhouses—and for a select few, even to the Olympics. Helping each young rowing soul find their greatest inner strength is a privilege I will cherish for the next 248 years of my existence. I believe that through this work, I am a small cogwheel contributing to a net positive in humanity.
To the parents reading this, I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to work with your child and help them reach their dreams. If you’d like to discuss how I can assist your son or daughter in finding the most direct path to rowing success, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Thank you, and have a beautiful day!
